High-Lift Garage Door Conversion: preparing for the visit

You want to keep the sectional door, but its standard track layout conflicts with a renovation above the parking bay.

Open, close, repeat, for years.

You want to keep the sectional door, but its standard track layout conflicts with a renovation above the parking bay. There is visible room over the opening for the door to climb before it needs to turn inward.

Worth answering before the call

What clear height do you need beneath the fully open door? Is the ceiling flat, sloped, finished or open to the framing? How much wall height is available above the door header?

Can decorative hardware or added insulation affect the design?

Anything that changes door weight can influence counterbalance selection. Overlay trim, reinforcement, glazing, insulation additions and multiple coating layers are therefore recorded during assessment. If weight is added after conversion, the manual balance should be reviewed. Sharing planned door upgrades early lets the spring, drum and cable design reflect the configuration that will actually be operated.

Why are new cable drums usually part of the project?

A high-lift door changes how cable must wind as the panels move vertically and then turn. High-lift drums use a contoured groove profile to manage that changing leverage and help balance the door through its travel. Drum selection is coordinated with door weight, lift dimension, cable length, shaft and spring design rather than chosen as an isolated hardware swap.
