Repair & Maintenance
How should I prepare for the appointment?
Move the car out if you can and clear a metre or so in front of the door and along both tracks so the technician can reach the hinges and brackets. Find the door and opener manuals and any earlier repair paperwork. Have every remote and the keypad code to hand. If something has changed lately, be ready to say when and what you noticed first. If the door looks wrong, leave it where it is. Garage Door Safety Inspection
My door has a lock bar. Should it be used with an opener?
Not while the opener is connected. If the slide lock is engaged and someone presses the remote, the opener pulls against a locked door and can bend the top section or strip its gear. On a door driven by an opener the lock is usually disabled or removed during a tune-up, and the opener's own hold on the door provides the security. If you want a manual lock for holidays, the technician can show you how to use it safely with the opener unplugged. Garage Door Tune-Up
Are the springs involved in an off-track door?
Frequently, in one of two ways. Springs that are worn, broken or mismatched to the door's weight make the opener carry a load it was never meant to, dragging the sections out of line. And whenever cables must be re-seated or replaced, the spring tension has to be released and rewound to do it. The technician assesses the springs at the start and tells you whether they are part of the fix. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
Can I keep using the door while I wait for the section?
If the damage is cosmetic and the hinges, rollers and cables are sound, the door can usually stay in service. If a section is folded, a hinge has pulled out or a cable has slackened, the technician braces the door, disconnects the opener and asks you to leave it closed, because the opener pulling on a weakened section can turn a repairable door into a larger job. You will be told clearly which applies. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
Will new rollers make my door quieter?
Usually, and often dramatically. Rollers are the only part of the door that touches the track, so most of a door's clatter starts there. Moving from worn steel or bare plastic wheels to nylon ball-bearing rollers changes the sound more than any other single part. The rest of the quiet comes from the same visit: hinges lubricated, loose bolts tightened, the track squared so nothing rubs. Springs can still squeak on their own, and the technician can treat those separately. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Are hinges on a wood door different?
The hinges themselves are the same numbered galvanized parts, but the fastening changes. Wood stiles take lag screws or carriage bolts with nuts and washers rather than self-drilling metal screws, and the timber's condition matters as much as the hinge. Softened or split wood around the holes is filled, reinforced or bridged with a backer plate before the hinge goes back on, so the new hardware bites into something solid. What is the track made of, and what sizes are there?
It is galvanized steel folded into a channel that the roller wheels ride in. Residential doors almost always use two-inch track, with three-inch reserved for heavier or wider doors. The curved piece comes in a radius, commonly 12 or 15 inches, that sets how much headroom the door uses. Replacement pieces are ordered to the same profile, gauge and radius as the rest of the set. What happens during the visit?
The opener is disconnected and the door clamped. The technician identifies the counterbalance type, inspects both cables, the drums, brackets, rollers, track and springs, and explains what is found. The springs are unloaded, the old cables removed, new ones fitted and set so the door is level, and the springs wound back. The door is then balanced by hand, the opener reconnected and its safety features tested while you watch. Garage Door Cable Replacement

Openers & Access
My remote only works when I am close to the door. Why?
Short range is almost always interference or a weak signal, not a broken opener. Certain LED bulbs, including ones fitted in the opener's own sockets, emit noise on the frequency remotes use. A remote battery near the end of its life also loses reach before it fails outright. The technician tests range with a known-good remote, swaps bulbs, checks the antenna wire hangs free below the head unit, and replaces the battery or remote as needed. The door is stuck. Should I pull the red cord?
Yes, if you need the door open and the door is closed or nearly so. Pulling the handle frees the door from the trolley so it can be lifted by hand. Do not pull it while the door is open, because a door with a weak spring can drop. If the door will not lift by hand, or feels very heavy, leave it and mention that when you call, since it points to a spring rather than the drive. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
What information helps when I book a belt-drive repair?
The make and model printed on the motor head, roughly how old the operator is, what the belt is doing and what it sounds like, when it started, whether the red cord has been pulled and whether anyone has adjusted anything. A photograph along the rail showing the belt, and one of the label, settle most questions before the visit. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
How do I test the safety reversal myself?
Two checks, once a month, each starting with the door fully open. For the first, set a scrap of 2x4 flat on the concrete where the door will land and press the close button; the moment it meets the wood it should climb back to the top. For the second, start the door closing and pass a broom or your arm across the low sensor beam; it should reverse just the same. Any hesitation means a small adjustment is due. How can I tell if the balance has changed later?
During a planned manual check, a meaningful change may appear as a door that feels much heavier, will not remain controlled at an intermediate position or begins moving unevenly. New cable slack, rubbing or abrupt travel also deserves attention. Note the position and behaviour, then keep the door still for a technician's assessment. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
Can insulated doors include windows?
Yes. Windows are selected with the section design so their frames, glazing and reinforcement suit the door. Placement influences daylight, privacy, exterior proportions, thermal characteristics and completed weight. Single or multi-pane options may be available for a given model. Settling the layout before ordering lets the counterbalance and hardware specification account for the glazed sections from the beginning. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
How is the new door tested after installation?
Technicians cycle it by hand to assess balance, cable tracking, roller travel, clearances, and seal contact. After the operator is connected, they set the open and close limits, confirm the manual release, interrupt the photoelectric beam, and conduct the prescribed contact-reversal check. Hardware and reinforcement receive a final visual review with the door closed and raised. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Can the opening be widened for a larger door?
A wider opening can be a separate renovation project, but it requires more than changing the door order. The header, side framing, exterior finish, electrical items and supporting loads need appropriate review, along with any permit or design requirements. Once that work has defined and prepared the final opening, the carriage-house door can be measured and specified against stable dimensions. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
